Amy Garrett-Williams holds her hands together and appears to be enjoying a conversation. Dan Sargent, a man with short curly brown hair and a goatee, smiles whilst standing indoors in a plain white long-sleeved shirt. Flowers and large windows brighten the background. Why local food matters

The food system shapes how we live, from our communities’ health to the land’s well-being. Yet many people have lost the connection between food and place.

Local farmers are often under-resourced, undervalued and overlooked. At the same time, communities across Wales are looking for more sustainable, affordable and transparent ways to access fresh produce.

Bannau Acres set out to bridge that gap. Their aim was to create a more straightforward, fairer way for people in Bannau Brycheiniog, Powys and Monmouthshire to find and support small-scale, regenerative farms – and for those farms to reach more people who care about what they eat and where it comes from.

Three adults stand outdoors, smiling and posing together. They are dressed in casual, work-style clothing and appear to be on a farm, with green plants and a glasshouse visible in the background. A hand holds a yellow tote bag in front of lush green leaves. The bag reads Banana Acres in small text and Discover the taste of local. in large black letters.

Listening to those who grow

We worked closely with Bannau Acres and engaged with farmers from across the region to understand their needs: What tools would make the most significant difference to them? How could we help customers feel confident, informed and motivated to buy local? How can we help to celebrate them and the integral work they do?

From this, we developed a clear, user-centred strategy – one that would elevate the work of farmers, simplify the customer journey and grow a sense of shared purpose between the two.

Rooted in place, designed for people

The brand identity is grounded in the landscapes and values of the region – warm, honest and quietly hopeful. It was designed to feel both personal and practical, making space for individual farm voices while giving the broader movement a recognisable presence.

We created a website that does more than list farms. It introduces people to the growers behind their food, explains how veg box schemes work and shows the value of supporting local, seasonal produce. Each farm has its own profile to share what it grows, how it grows it and how to buy from it directly.

Behind the scenes, the platform is designed to grow – easy to update, scalable for new listings and built to support future partnerships and campaigns.

Four posters on a concrete wall advertise Bannau Acres, showcasing local food images, a smiling couple outdoors, and text highlighting fresh, seasonal produce from independent farms. Green leaves hang above, adding to the natural ambience.

The team at Everglow is super creative and, crucially, super easy to work with too. The website they created for us is not only an example of great design, but it’s simple to update and offers us flexibility for future development as our organisation grows.

Turning ideas into action

The brand launched with a focus on clarity, trust and community. Whether someone was discovering local veg boxes for the first time or looking for a better alternative to supermarket shopping, the experience was designed to feel welcoming and straightforward.

A growing community, a stronger system

Since the launch, farmers have reported an increased interest in their services and improved visibility among local audiences. The site has helped shift public behaviour by making it easier to choose local food with purpose and confidence.

Bannau Acres continues to build momentum – giving people better access to local food, strengthening small farms and helping shape a more resilient, sustainable future for communities in Wales.
